Dressed in a suit, British blogger Tony roams the city alone, documenting everything he sees on camera. This is his unique way of exploring Chinese cities. “I want to test how safe this place really is.” Instead of visiting popular tourist spots or taking generic check-in photos, he wanders into local alleyways. Through countless late-night walking videos and authentic footage frame by frame, he shatters one-sided stereotypes spread overseas and presents a vivid, tranquil side of China to the world.

“I Came to China Only to See the Truth for Myself”

Tony hails from Southampton, UK—the port city where the Titanic set sail. Like most Westerners, his understanding of China before visiting was shaped solely by one-sided Western media coverage. “They claim China is unsafe, its people live in poverty, and everyone dresses and looks identical.” Tony openly calls these stereotypes absurd and biased. “I bought into them when I was younger, but once I traveled abroad, I realized they were all lies.”
Curiosity drove him to travel thousands of3 miles. In 2007, while traveling in the United States, he met a friend from Shanghai who urged him to visit China. “I came to China to verify whether those rumors were true,” Tony said with a sincere, determined smile during an interview. “What I found is that this is the safest, friendliest and most reassuring country I have ever been to.” After a two-week stay in Shanghai, he took a teaching post and moved to Guangzhou, before settling in Zhaoqing, where he has lived for 19 years.

“Western media are misleading Western audiences with fake news,” Tony said sternly. “I hate this prejudice, so I want to be the one telling the truth.”
Tony has a distinctive, ritualistic way of exploring China: wandering the streets at night in a suit while filming videos.
The suit is his signature. In his eyes, wandering late at night in formal wear creates a stark contrast—doing so would be a risky venture in London, yet it is an ordinary daily occurrence in China. He uses this sharp contrast to show his Western audience just how safe China is. Tony shared that he would never dare walk alone late at night in the UK. “If you walk down the street in a suit carrying a briefcase, you could get robbed within ten minutes.” But in China, he can stroll the midnight streets, withdraw cash and film videos freely in a suit with his bag in hand, without worrying about any danger. “This sense of security is hard to come by in Western countries,” he has remarked time and again. “China’s safety is not staged; it is tangible and present every single moment.”

Discovering Qingdao Through Its Nightscape
Now retired, Tony continues to traverse China on foot. Qingdao was the first stop on his 30-day cross-country tour of China. He arrived in late May, and this coastal city left him with an exceptionally warm first impression. As soon as he exited the airport, staff handed him a free travel ticket for being over 60 years old. This unexpected gesture of kindness instantly erased his sense of unfamiliarity.
At 11 p.m. the following night, Tony put on his signature suit and set off from a café to wander Qingdao’s nighttime streets by himself. He traveled without a filming crew, security detail or staged arrangements, just like an ordinary local resident, uncovering the coastal city’s night scene step by step.

Before arriving, he imagined Qingdao as a small town, yet he was stunned by its scale upon arrival: a metropolis home to over 10 million residents with sprawling urban areas, completely overturning his preconceptions. “It’s huge; I couldn’t possibly cover it all in one day,” Tony laughed. “And there are so many hills here. I climbed one slope after another during my midnight walk, covering six to seven kilometers in 90 minutes and wearing myself out.” Underlying his playful complaint is obvious fondness for the city.
During his midnight walk, countless local Qingdao residents passed by him. Many greeted him warmly with a simple “hello”—no crowds gathering to stare, no intrusive attention, only natural, calm and genuine kindness. The cool sea breeze swept over clean streets, pedestrians walked unhurriedly, and the city remained quiet and orderly, putting him fully at ease. “I would never dare do this back in Britain. Walking alone for an hour and a half late at night in a suit, carrying my phone, camera and wallet—unthinkable,” Tony admitted. “But in Qingdao, I felt no fear at all. This place is incredibly safe, quiet, orderly and reassuring.” He was pleasantly surprised to find unlocked shared bikes left untouched on the roadside, bright convenience stores staffed by polite clerks, spotless streets deep into the night, and impeccable urban order. There were no conflicts or feelings of unease, nor the so-called “oppressive surveillance” depicted in biased reports. What he saw was nothing but authentic urban life and peace. “This is what I want to show Western viewers: China’s safety is not a performance; it is ordinary daily life.”
“Qingdao locals are incredibly friendly, the climate is pleasant, and the food is delicious.” When asked which destination he would most recommend after traveling across dozens of countries, his answer was immediate: China ranks first in terms of safety, culture and quality of life.

At the end of the interview, when asked what message he wanted to send to people in the West, Tony paused for a moment and spoke earnestly and gently: “Don’t trust one-sided media narratives. Come and see for yourselves. China is safe, affordable and fascinating. Its people are warm, and life here is peaceful. Tony来自英国南安普顿，泰坦尼克号起航的城市。和大多数西方人一样，在来到中国之前，他对这里的认知，全部来自西方媒体的单向输出。“他们说中国不安全、人们生活贫穷，所有人穿一样的衣服、留一样的发型。”Tony直言，那些刻板印象荒谬又片面，“我年轻时信了，可当我真正走出来，才发现那全是谎言。”
好奇心，成了他跨越山海的第一动力。2007年，他在美国旅行时偶遇一位上海朋友，推荐他来中国。“我来中国，是为了验证那些传言是不是真的。”Tony在采访中笑着说，眼神真诚而坚定，“结果我发现，这里是我去过最安全、最友好、最让我安心的国家。”于是，在上海短暂的两周停留后，他带着一份教职正式奔赴广州，后来又定居肇庆，一呆就是19年。

现已退休的Tony，继续用脚步丈量中国。而青岛，是Tony三十天游中国计划的第一站。5月下旬，初抵青岛，这座海滨城市给Tony留下了格外温暖的第一印象。刚出机场，工作人员就为满60岁的他，送上了免费车票，这份突如其来的热情与真诚，让初来乍到的他瞬间卸下了陌生感。
第二天晚上11点，Tony换上他标志性的西装，从一家咖啡店出发，独自走进青岛的夜色。没有团队跟随，没有安保陪同，没有刻意安排，他就像一个普通路人，用脚步一点点丈量这座海滨城市的夜晚。
